Meeting on the Occasion of the 75th Birthday of Professor Jiří Močkoř — A Tribute to a Scholar Who Shaped the University of Ostrava
Prof. RNDr. Jiří Močkoř, DrSc., a distinguished Czech mathematician and university educator who served for many years as Rector of the University of Ostrava, has devoted his scientific career to the field of mathematics and his academic efforts primarily to the advancement of the University of Ostrava. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Institute for Research and Applications of Fuzzy Modeling and, as rector, significantly contributed to the development of the university, particularly through the founding of new faculties and the strengthening of its research infrastructure. He is the author of numerous scholarly works and articles, and his academic achievements have been repeatedly recognized at international conferences.
His 75th birthday thus represents not only a personal milestone, but also an occasion to acknowledge the lasting and inspiring impact he has had — and continues to have — on the University of Ostrava. The lecture “Why is Category Theory important for Mathematics (and not only in mathematics)?”, delivered on the occasion of his 75th birthday, offered attendees both an expert exposition of the importance of category theory in contemporary mathematics and a unique opportunity to reflect on Professor Močkoř’s exceptional contributions to the academic community and to the university as a whole.
In a clear and compelling manner, Professor Močkoř demonstrated how category theory integrates diverse mathematical structures into a unified conceptual framework, and why this approach is increasingly influential beyond the domain of mathematics. The ceremonial atmosphere of the event further underscored the significance of his life’s jubilee, which served as a dignified tribute to his long-standing academic and scientific endeavours.
